'Gauchito Gil,' who is part of Argentina's popular culture, was an 1800's outlaw who became a mystical symbol of bravery; stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Born Antonio Mamerto Gil Nunez in Corrientes in the 1840's he was executed on Jan. 8, 1878. Every year more than 100,000 people visit his sanctuary, near Mercedes, on the date of his death, to leave offerings and ask for favors at the shrine where he was allegedly executed.
